what is it...

AVL is short for Automated Vehicle Location. This uses a GPS engine to position the vehicle and a modem to communicate the location to a distant computer server, where the location data is collected and a great number of pieces of information can be derived. Such things as speed and direction, (observing speed limits) when a vehicle is inside or outside the public road system, how much extra fuel that's been consumed while idling can also be documented. (fuel tax rebate)  Where a vehicle is after it has been stolen.

how it works...

Usually a provider of the service has a server system set up to absorb the data and on request, download a synopsis of the data collected on a per vehicle and per customer basis. They often have a relationship with a cellular or satellite communications company and charge a premium to the customer for the entire service. You would typically pay for the GPS, Communication hardware and installation up front, then an ongoing communication charge based on how often your data is sent to the server.

avl the patchmap way...

Guess what... the system described above has one small? problem: the driver still is getting lost because they don't know where they are! You can tell how fast they were going, where they were at a particular time.. on some systems that's yesterday, but even if they were able to phone you and you were able to go on-line to see where they (last) were, that could cause more problems as the data could be quite old!

We have a complete solution (via third party): GPS with PatchMap DisPatch™ on the dashboard, so that the driver can route properly to anywhere necessary on his own, without communication costs. When connected to an AVL modem, the GPS is enabled for both positional info and texting back and forth to the dispatcher. If the dispatcher's software is set up right they can even 'push' a location to the truck's GPS for a 'side trip on the way home'.

You may then find that corporate cell phones are all but eliminated which will easily pay for the changes..

avl utilizing patchmap's wms...
